how the fuck is it going?

first week of school done, and i feel none the smarter, but i seem to have a lot less money. i'm taking a lot of horrible, bullshit classes. spanish, math, really easy. art history from prehistory to some other completely boring time period. "latin american perspectives" would be ok except all we do is talk about fucking Brazil. some random american literature course featuring feathery hippie teacher who probably hasn't read a damn thing in forty years. i can already feel my worth ethic withering away. i rented the x-files movie and i feel like a million bucks.

by the way, does anyone know of a site i could upload my pictures to that doesn't care if it's porn or not? no n00dz til i can find something other than photobucket.

i do apologize, but the truth is Brazil is not very interesting me and because it is such a horribly huge trend to incessantly obsess over it, i've become rather bitter (not to mention Honduras is probably the most neglected latin american country). also, i hardly ever think of it as Latin American, to be honest. it's more European/something else. i'm sure it's not a bad place, but i have no interest in its progression as anything. i'd be much more motivated to learn about any other country down there.

That's fair enough. It's not right for them to shove it down your throat. But, just for the record, Brasil is one of the most un-European countries in South America. Argentina is by far the most European one.

brazil is not strongly connected to rest of latin america, in other means than location. beyond language, many of the remnants from spanish culture/society that legitimize the term "latin america"are minimal to nonexistent, and therefore the country is often (self-)excluded from latin america. brazil is latin when americans want to group everyone south of them together, and when bolivians want brazilian citizenship. its completely natural to consider them something else.
also, brazil is probably second to argentina in european-ness, and thats because argentina is whiter than france and england and simply cant be beat. argentines are obsessed with european culture, while brazilians are obsessed with themselves. still, the dominant class of brazilians: in society, academia, and commerce, are pretty much white and hold strong to pretty european values. bahia and the amazon are obvious exceptions, but the majority of brazilian society is predominantly european. most latin american countries have a rich white class, however the majority of the population carry values that stem more from "mestiza" society if you will. blacks in brazil are poor samba teachers and indians are just plain dead.

Well most people in Brazil descend either from Europeans or Africans or a mix of the two with much less indigenous blood than a lot of other Latin American countries. Plus they speak an entirely different fucking language. I can understand much more Italian from my knowledge of Spanish than Portuguese, which I've never been able to make sense of. Additionally, while my family has opinions of every South American country, I've never heard anyone mention Brazil, simply because they are culturally separate. I find even Haitians to be more familiar.

I'm really glad that someone knows what I mean when I say I don't regard Brazil when I think of the rest of Latin America. I mean, Brazilians really aren't "Hispanic" in my sense of the term.
